(Folkman & Lazarus, 1988). Basically, two types of coping are problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. The former is related with ‘dealing with the problem causing distress’ and the latter is related with ‘regulating emotion’ (Folkman, Lazarus, Gruen, & DeLongis, 1986, p. 572). For GMU Ethics 665, Spring 2014, Group 4 research by Lazarus and Folkman (32); also Refs. 33-35) developed measurement approaches bearing the same metatheoretical stamp. These pioneering efforts were followed by additional questionnaire versions designed also to measure and study coping as a process and examine its consequences for ad-aptation. These additional versions overlapped Lazarus and Folkman's interpretation of stress focuses on the transaction between people and their external environment (known as the Transactional Model). The model contends that stress may not be a stressors if the person does not perceive the stressors as a threat but rather as positive or even challenging. From Folkman and Lazarus' Ways of Coping Questionnaire and Charles Carver and colleagues' Coping Orientation of Problem Experience (COPE), some common strategies or categories for coping responses are accepting the situation or one's role in it, active/confrontive coping to remove the stressor or oneself from the stressor, anticipatory coping aimed toward an expected but uncontrollable event However, Lazarus and Folkman suggested that Coping is closely related to the concept of cognitive appraisal.

Lazarus and Folkman coined the concept of cognitive appraisal and reappraisal. According to their theory, stress coping implies an intricate process of thinking and assigning meaning to it. They explained the coping mechanism by the stress cycle where an individual’s perception of the stressful situation decides how he would cope with it (Anshel, 1996; Anshel & Weinberg, 1999; Roth & Cohen, 1986).

Coping lazarus and folkman

According to Lazarus, the effect that stress has on a person is based more on that persons feeling of threat, vulnerability and ability to cope than on the stressful event itself. He defines psychological stress as a "particular relationship between the person and environment that is appraised by the person as taxing or exceeding his or her resources and endangering his or her wellbeing."

This definition is the foundation of stress and coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Lazarus and Folkman (1984), one of the pioneers of the coping theory, defined coping as: constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person. Coping or coping strategies refer to the “specific efforts, both behavioral and psychological, that people employ to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize stressful events” (Carver, 1998). According to Psychologist Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman, there are two basic types of coping, and Enligt Lazarus och Folkman 1984 finns det fyra copingstrategier för att hantera (bemästra) stressfulla situationer.
